I write about science and history and take photos of wildlife

I want to write about science for the general public. Some of the topics I have written about and researched include human sexuality, firearms and ornithological discoveries. Much of my work can be found as PDFs or links on my website

It’s always fun to get out the long lens and photograph the critters that live there

I stayed until the two families paddled their way to the far side of the pond, then moved to see it there were any turtles sunning themselves on the dead tree that has been laying half submerged for the past forty years I have been visiting that pond.  There were only three or four, but the day was cool and I’m sure that old tree will be covered with all sizes of turtles when it gets sunny and hot.

Birding is the opposite of being at the movies — you’re outside, not sitting in a windowless box; you’re stalking wild animals, not looking at pictures of them

In some cases, it might just be that we are noticing the birdsong more as the noise from vehicles and general hubbub has turned down its volume

I really hope we are learning from this crisis. Many lives have been lost as the virus has spread but I am sure the health measures have helped to save many thousands of people. And we shouldn’t be afraid to mention this knock-on effect on that is benefiting our wildlife. Let’s hope we can look at this and improve the way we live in the future in a way that supports nature.

Much of what the woodpecker does feels incredibly practical

In terms of their pecking, this behaviour has a few functions.  They drum their bill on the tree to make holes to store acorns and nuts in.  They communicate through drumming, using it to warn of danger, as a threat, to communicate with rivals and potential mates.  It can be a deterrent and an invitation as well as a practical way of storing food.  Practical feels like a crucial word here, so much of what the woodpecker does feels incredibly practical.
